Autism Defined

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex neurobehavioral condition which manifest during childhood and last throughout a person’s life. The reason why it is referred to as a spectrum is due to the varying range of symptoms, some of which include:

  1. Difficulties in establishing relationships
  2. Delays in verbal and non-verbal communication
  3. Delayed milestones and learning difficulties
  4. Hyperactivity especially in toddlers
  5. Repetitive behaviour e.g arranging and re-arranging objects
  6. Hypo or hyper sensitivity to external stimuli ie no reaction or extreme reaction to stimuli

Autism is often referred to as an “invisible condition” because there are no outward signs or symptoms which one can relate the condition to and unfortunately at times the condition may be misinterpreted as bad behaviour especially in children.

As mentioned above, there is no cure for autism however given that this condition is a spectrum, with the proper care and support individuals with autism can still make meaningful contributions to society.
